An evening with Canada's top Olympians

ARC Energy Trust and ARC Financial Corporation (collectively ARC) are proud to be co-hosting and organizing a Gala dinner, “Celebrating Excellence – An Evening with Canada’s Top Olympians”, hosted by Brian Williams. It will be a celebration of the incredible accomplishments of Canada’s top winter and summer athletes and it will also raise awareness for two very worthwhile organizations, Right To Play and the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary (CSCC).

The idea for the Gala comes as a result of ARC's Inspiring Excellence program. To learn more about the program click here

Right to Play
Right To Play is an athlete-driven international humanitarian organization that uses specially-designed sport and play programs to encourage the healthy physical, social and emotional development of the world’s most disadvantaged children and their communities. Right To Play works directly with leading aid agencies – UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), UNICEF, CARE, and the Red Cross.

Right To Play was founded by four-time Norwegian Olympic speed skating gold medalist Johann Olav Koss, our organization’s President and CEO. Johann was declared ‘One of 100 Future Leaders of Tomorrow’ by TIME Magazine and ‘One of 1000 Global Leaders’ by the World Economic Forum. Originally known as Olympic Aid, Right To Play is supported by a network of over 250 Canadian and international athletes including Wayne Gretzky, Silken Laumann, Charmaine Crooks, Catriona Le May Doan, Steve Podborski, Marnie McBean, Beckie Scott, Clara Hughes, Kristina Groves, Arne Dankers, Lindsay Alcock, and many more. Our Athlete Ambassadors are committed to improving the lives of children, and strengthening their communities, through the power of sport.

Right To Play engages and trains Canadian and international volunteers who work in developing countries to implement our programs. Right To Play programs impact refugee children, former child soldiers and young people at risk or orphaned by HIV/AIDS in over twenty countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Our volunteers are delivering on our promise to shape children’s lives by improving their health, providing growth opportunities, teaching conflict resolution, and promoting peace.

Right To Play also uses sport and play to mobilize communities around key health issues in a fun and social way specifically to support national health objectives and campaigns. Right To Play’s SportHealth program teaches the importance of vaccinations, HIV/AIDS awareness, TB and malaria prevention.

At the end of 2005, Right To Play had 40 projects in 20 countries, reaching approximately 500,000 children on a weekly basis through our sport and play programs. We have 80 volunteers in the field who, in turn, have trained 6,000 local coaches. However, there are many more children and many more refugee camps that we have not been able to reach due to lack of sufficient funding.

For 2006 Right To Play will be in 4 new countries: Indonesia, Lebanon, Liberia, and Sri Lanka, reaching 750,000 children on a weekly basis by year end.

Supporting the Dream
The pursuit of excellence in any endeavor starts with passion. When you are doing what you love to do, you do not need to be supervised or externally motivated. The highest achievers are those who are guided by their passion. Passion drives perfection. At the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary we strive for this perfection.

The objective of the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary (CSCC) is to surround over 300 of Canada’s best athletes with an atmosphere of excellence, providing them with the expertise and support they need to reach the international podium in their sport. To ensure optimal athlete development and progress, each National Team based at the CSCC has a specialized ‘Performance Enhancement Team’ consisting of experts in five main pillars of support: Sport Psychology, Exercise Physiology, Sport Medicine, Biomechanics, and Nutrition.

The Olympics on Home Soil
The target has been set for Canada to lead the medal count for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is a challenging goal, and we know that in order to earn an above average return of medals as a nation, we will need to be increasingly consistent in our performances across all sports leading up to the Games. Canada’s athletes therefore, need more support than ever.

While the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary is proud of this passion-driven, world-class training environment, we continue to improve our service delivery system, finding more avenues through which we can provide Canada’s athletes with the leading edge they need to succeed.

Canadian Sport Heroes Project
A select group of athletes have changed the face of sport in Canada. Olympic medalists, world champions, fierce competitors — they have competed for our country, they have won with pride and lost with dignity and through their efforts have proven that sport can capture the imaginations of an entire country — and often the entire world.

In a series of portraits by Canadian artist Gordon Milne, these athletes continue to contribute to their country and to the dream of sports excellence on the international stage.
